THE PEOPLE OF KARAMOJA

Karamoja is Uganda's most tested region, marked by drought, food insecurity, and a way of life still shaped by cattle, conflict, and survival. Evangelical faith reaches only a small share of the population here, while poverty indicators continue moving in the wrong direction relative to the rest of the country. Pastors in Karamoja carry churches through hunger and hardship most Western ministries have never had to face, often without a single Bible in their own language to preach from.

WHY KARAMOJA IS NEXT

Karamoja's real problem is biblical scarcity. Pastors are preaching from memory, culture, and dreams because Scripture in their own language has never reached the pulpit. EBC is entering through an organic church connection out of Serere, with Pastor Joshua Oriide serving as the inside partner and host on the ground.

162 pastors and 162 churches are already registered for the first cohort, a sign of the same hunger that met EBC in Buyende and Serere before a single class had even begun. EBC is building out the full training model now, translating the entire 700 plus page curriculum into the local language so that every pastor in Karamoja learns Scripture the way it was written to be understood, not through a foreign tongue.

The logistics here are unlike anything EBC has faced in Buyende or Serere. Pastors will need monthly transport by truck across difficult terrain. Food has to be sourced from outside the region. Cold weather bedding and latrine construction are being planned as part of the foundation, not an afterthought, because a training program cannot ask pastors to endure conditions no one has prepared for.

THE SPIRITUAL SOIL

Karamoja carries a spiritual weight unlike anything EBC has faced in Buyende or Serere. Evangelical faith reaches only a small share of the population here, while food taboos, revenge culture, and generations of conflict still shape daily life more than Scripture does. Villages still carry guns. Cattle, not Christ, remain the measure of a man's worth in many communities. Pastors preach, but often without a single Bible in their own language to preach from, relying on culture and memory rather than the Word.

The EBC team's pilot visit in June 2026 confirmed what field reports had already suggested. This is a region tested daily, by drought, by hunger, by a way of life that does not easily bend. Nearly half the population faces food insecurity in a given season. It is not a place most ministries choose to go.

That is precisely why EBC is going. A pastor who has never held Scripture in his own language cannot hand his people a sword he does not have. Karamoja's deepest need is not sympathy. It is the Word of God, taught faithfully, in the language its people actually speak.

"We love our people, but we do not know how to feed them from the Word."

WHEN THE WORd TOOK ROOT

Buyende has long carried a reputation in this part of Uganda as a center of devil worship and satanic practice. Kagulu Rock, the sacred birthplace of the Busoga kingdom, sits at the heart of the district, and the spiritual authority tied to it runs deep. Pastor Andrew, our field director, has described Buyende plainly as a devil’s stronghold, and reported that many church leaders in the district had themselves been connected to that world before training arrived.

This was not always separate from church life. It lived inside it. Some pastors led from dreams and visions instead of Scripture. One well known pastor outside our program was reported to require fresh blood sacrifices of sheep before his congregation could receive forgiveness or deliverance. Syncretism, the blending of traditional spiritual practice with the Christian faith, was named directly by pastors themselves as something they had been living in and needed to repent of.

Yet this is the same district where pastors showed up by the hundreds through a downpour, where existing students turned newcomers into their own disciples because there was no more room to add them, and where space for training had to be built rather than simply found. The demand did not match the darkness. It outran it.

Shepherd the Word

EBC is building the same verse by verse training model that has already trained hundreds of pastors in Buyende and Serere, translating all 700 plus pages of the curriculum into the local language so pastors in Karamoja can study Scripture the way it was written to be understood. 162 pastors representing 162 churches are registered for the first cohort.

SEND THE WORD

EBC is planning to place an estimated 2,500 Bibles in the hands of pastors and church members across Karamoja as the program builds out, equipping men who have preached for years without ever holding Scripture in their own language.

SOUND THE WORD

EBC is planning to distribute an estimated 1,000 plus Audio Bibles across Karamoja, giving pastors and listening group leaders a way to bring Scripture to congregations where literacy remains low and printed Bibles are scarce.

THE ROAD AHEAD

A pilot visit already took the EBC team into Karamoja to listen before speaking, meeting pastors, attending church services, and studying the ground before the real work begins. The first cohort of 162 pastors is registered and waiting. Translation of the full curriculum is underway. What EBC saw take root in Buyende and Serere, hunger for Scripture met by trained shepherds who never stop teaching, is the same thing being built in Karamoja from the ground up.
